Assisted Reality in the Automotive Sector

ABI Research looks at how Assisted Reality head-mounted displays are transforming the automotive industry, making it faster, smarter and more efficient.

Head-mounted displays have proven invaluable over the last five years. While many industries are seeing the benefits of extended reality, it’s been a game-changer for a few of them. The automotive industry has proven to be ideally suited to leverage Assisted Reality due to its numerous applications for hands-free access to data and support.

Complexity is high in all facets of the automotive industry, and is particularly evident within environments, product, and processes. Factory floors are busy and host to complicated, specialist machinery, with little room for error thanks to immense scrap and downtime costs. As a product, automobiles themselves present incredible complexity through number of parts, assembly, and product variation. Auto service can be equally tricky, especially with new technology requiring training and specialty processes. In each of these areas, complexity can be reduced with HMDs and a capable platform supporting it.

As a hands-free worker enablement tool, Assisted Reality wearables are increasing efficiency through decreasing error rates, time to fix, and downtime. While the remote expert use case is fast becoming ubiquitous, adding value is still possible via integration with existing systems. Remote expertise is a common entry point for customers thanks to fast and easily understood ROI, but additional use cases such as workflow guidance, training, and real-time data visualization can leverage the use of these devices even further.

This report provides an insight into the impact that head-mounted displays have had on the automotive industry, while providing a forecast for the mass adoption of these devices.
